Life Insurance with HIV

UPDATE: There are now multiple companies offering HIV life insurance. Please read this article carefully for updated information on carriers that do and do not provide coverage.

When it comes to getting life insurance with HIV, you may have asked some of these questions:

  • Can you get life insurance if you have HIV?
  • How much will life insurance cost with HIV?
  • Is there a life insurance HIV test?

I’m sure you’re heard that it can be difficult to get approved. Or is it?

Well, it turns out, there are some life insurance companies who are understanding that HIV isn’t a health condition that is as risky to insure as it once was.

HIV life insurance with Prudential

UPDATE: Prudential has currently suspended the Aequalis program and it is not currently known if it will be returning. The good news is there are now multiple companies in this market which can improve your chances of coverage.

Prudential Financial Inc. is one of the country’s top life insurers.

They are the first major life insurance company to offer this type of policy publicly. This shows that the industry is recognizing that HIV has moved away from a death sentence and into a manageable disease.

Bottom line?

If you are living with HIV, The Prudential Life Insurance company provides a 10 year term and 15 year term life insurance option.

Life insurance for someone with HIV

There are more than 1.2 million Americans who are currently living with HIV and there are approximately 50,000 people diagnosed with HIV each year.

For decades, HIV has been a condition that has prevented the majority of people from securing decent benefit amounts.

While the life insurance industry regularly covers other conditions and diseases like Heart Disease and Cancer (at a higher cost than healthier people).

HIV Life Insurance with PrudentialIn the past, if you had HIV, you would not get approved and would receive a life insurance decline. You would typically purchase a “Guaranteed Issue” policy as that was the only life insurance option.

Guaranteed Issue life insurance typically provides a maximum death benefit of no more than $50,000. Some companies offer a maximum much less than $50,000!

These small benefit policies limited the majority of those seeking coverage for higher benefit amounts. Those wanting to protect their mortgage, salary, and their family’s future were not able to do so with a single guaranteed issue life insurance benefit policy.

Updated HIV life insurance companies

There are now multiple life insurance companies offering coverage for those with HIV. They include:

With multiple life insurance carriers providing coverage it can significantly improve your chance at securing a policy with a much higher death benefit than a Guaranteed Issue policy.

HIV Life Insurance Companies

Prudential was one of the few companies that provided life insurance for those with HIV. The type of coverage that Prudential offers will be 10 or 15 year term life policies.

The best part? These policies will also be able to be converted into a permanent policy that can cover your entire life.

Convertible term policies are when you change your 10 or 15 year term policy into a permanent life insurance policy.  An example of this would be changing and converting from term life into whole life insurance.

Do life insurance companies test for HIV?

When you apply for life insurance, companies will research your health, lifestyle, and finances. This process is called underwriting and they want to know how much of a risk you are before offering you a life insurance policy.

Not everyone may qualify for these policies however. You may qualify for HIV life insurance policies if you are living with HIV under the following conditions.

Mike McFarland, chief underwriting officer of Prudential Individual Life Insurance, stated

“As medical technology advances, we continuously evaluate and update our underwriting criteria, which has resulted in our ability to offer insurance to people dealing with various medical or chronic conditions.”

He also added that…“With advances in the successful treatment of people with HIV, we are now able to offer this population the opportunity to apply for life insurance- a milestone we see as a significant step in the right direction.”

HIV Life Insurance Coverage

Prudential was the first major life insurance company to provide term life coverage. They have done the research with medical underwriting data and with HIV life expectancy in order to develop and offer this product.

Now that Prudential has opened the door, it has encouraged other life insurance companies to follow. The life insurance business is very competitive which ultimately helps the consumer.

Often times when one company has a focus or niche on a certain health condition other companies will follow.

Scott Schoettes, HIV Project National Director of Lambda Legal, an organization that works to protect the rights of the LGBT and HIV/AIDS community, stated “Finally, an insurance company has realized that this is the right thing to do and that it is profitable from a business perspective to offer this product to people living with HIV.

Now that there is one company out there doing this, it will encourage others to do the same when they see that there is money to be made in this market.”

How much will life insurance for HIV positive cost?

The exact costs for this product will be determined after you have gone through the underwriting process. It is not guaranteed that you will qualify for coverage.

However, when life insurance for HIV positive individuals are approved – the cost would be comparable to policies that are offered to people with some forms of cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.

Your term life insurance policy will be table rated with a flat extra charge.

This means that the policies won’t be inexpensive and will cost more than standard term life insurance rates.

Want to get sample rates?

Here’s how:

Use our “INSTANT LIFE INSURANCE QUOTER”  Select 10 or 15 year term & $100,000 or more. Choose “Standard” as your health class rating. Locate the quotes from Prudential, American National, Symetra, Americo & John Hancock and multiply by 200%.

A table rating simply adds approximately 25% to every table above standard. So if your health condition was a Table Rating 1 (or Table A), you would add 25% to the Standard rate.

We’re seeing a Table 8 (or Table H) rating for life insurance for HIV positive people. and with a Flat Extra.

The HIV term life options will be a significant upgrade from minimal and basic coverage that typically comes with a Guaranteed Issue policy.

Prudential Life Insurance

Prudential has been an excellent company for several health conditions, tobacco users and marijuana smokers. For over 80 years, Prudential has underwritten life insurance for prostate cancer and breast cancer survivors. Offering life insurance for people with HIV is the next logical step.
