ING Reliastar is now VOYA, a highly-rated company that holds an excellent “A” score from A.M Best. Because of its good reputation and flexible policy options, it is one of the 30 life insurance companies that we recommend for our clients.
Originally a separate company, Reliastar was established in 1917 and then acquired by ING in 2000. ING is now considered the fourth-largest term life insurance company in the U.S, with over 13 million active customers.

VOYA / ING Term Life Insurance
This provider actually offers several different types of life insurance policies, but their term life insurance one is called “ING Term Smart”. Term Smart policies come in 10, 15, and 20-year terms, although before the term is up you are able to convert your policy to permanent coverage should you wish to do so. If you do decide to switch it to permanent, the process is fairly simple and you will be able to keep your original health rating without having to get a new medical exam.
VOYA / ING Return of Premium Life Insurance
Another type of life insurance from ING that is worth mentioning is their return of premium term policy. Policyholders of return of premium term life insurance are able to get back all of their premium payments if they live past the end of the policy term. This type of policy is naturally more expensive than regular term life insurance, but for some people it is worth it. Not every insurance provider offers this, so ING is a good option if this is something you are interested in.
VOYA / ING Rate Examples
Like other life insurance companies such as Protective and Primerica, ING bases their rates on the different health classes that applicants are placed into. The best, lowest, rates are offered to those who qualify for the Preferred Plus Non Tobacco class, with rates gradually increasing with every health class that follows.
To best demonstrate the type of rates offered by ING Reliastar, let’s look at an example based on real life situations. Let’s say Mike is a 40-year-old male seeking a $250,000 policy for a 20-year term. Depending on his overall health and medical history, Mike is likely to see the following rates:
Preferred Plus Non Tobacco: $21.44 a month
Preferred Non Tobacco: $25.38 a month
Select Non Tobacco: $31.06 a month
Standard Non Smoker: $37.63 a month
VOYA / ING Reliastar Reviews
According to the Better Business Bureau review page of ING, the company holds an “A” rating. Even better is the fact that the BBB page also shows zero complaints over the last 3 years. Obviously this does not mean that nobody has complained (with the sheer number of customers ING has, it would be unreasonable to think there are no complaints at all!), but if it were a less reliable insurance provider customer dissatisfaction would likely be a lot more visible.
Is VOYA / ING the Right Company for Me?
By now you may be asking yourself this question, and the truth is that ING Reliastar is the right provider for many people, but it is not for everyone. People have different needs and have different health histories, and so there is no “one size fits all” life insurance policy. For example, ING is an excellent provider if you have high cholesterol, since they have very flexible guidelines, another insurance company may be right for you, based on your specific situation. It is always wise to compare different companies before deciding who you want to apply for coverage with, and you can actually find reviews of other providers right here on our blog.
